Protecting the safety and health of our colleagues, our customers and others is critical to the success of our business. Making all of our trading locations safe environments and controlling the risks from our operations are key to maintaining that protection.

We are committed to achieving the best practicable standard of health and safety for our employees, customers and visitors to our trading locations. We consider effective health and safety management to be integral to the success our businesses.

Management leadership and colleague involvement

Effective management of health and safety is driven by our senior management teams, but relies upon the commitment and involvement of all our colleagues. Training programmes ensure that colleagues have the required knowledge and skills to enable them to work safely, whilst effective communication and involvement helps develop awareness and commitment to safe working.

Our training programmes include Safety Leadership and Management courses for management teams, practical technical skills training for key operatives and instruction for all colleagues in relevant safe systems of work.

A Weekly HSE Information Pack is used to deliver key messages and information to colleagues throughout our business and forms one of the cornerstones of our health & safety management system.

Our approach to health & safety aligns closely with our 6 “Winning Ways”, in particular, the mantra “Don’t Walk Past a Problem”.

A strategic approach to continual improvement

Improving safety performance across all of our brands doesn’t happen by accident; but through a strategic and planned approach. The success of our safety management efforts is closely monitored through a range of audit and inspection programmes. Compliance with internal standards and legal requirements is measured and used to drive further improvement.

Accidents and incidents are investigated thoroughly; ensuring we understand their causes and enabling corrective action to be taken.

Health and safety performance is measured and evaluated as part of the overall performance of each of our brands. Our internal HSE audit scores have risen steadily and consistently over the last 3 years and each year we modify our audit to challenge ourselves with ever-more exacting standards.
